Breast surgeon’s victims denied compensation

The Mail on Sunday reports that hundreds of victims of breast surgeon Ian Paterson have been forced to take legal action against private hospitals which are refusing to compensate them.

Spire Healthcare is understood to have told Paterson’s victims it is not responsible for the botched breast operations the consultant performed at two of its West Midlands hospitals between 1998 and 2011.

The Medical Defence Union (MDU) has also refused to pay out because a clause in the surgeon’s policy said he was not covered in the event of a criminal conviction. More than 500 of Paterson’s victims are being represented by Thompsons Solicitors.

Spire Hospitals said the High Court case was “an appropriate way of determining who is responsible for Paterson’s actions and securing compensation and justice.”
