Victims of blood contamination to receive damages

October 1, 2017

Haemophiliacs and other NHS patients who were infected with HIV and hepatitis by contaminated blood products in the 1970s and 80s are to launch a High Court group action seeking damages, after winning a ruling.

Over 500 claimants, including survivors of the contamination and the families of those who have died, are to claim compensation. Steven Snowden QC, appearing for the claimants, said that documentation showed that the NHS was aware of the risks of contamination years before they informed patients, claiming that as a result, earlier settlement agreements should not be taken into consideration. Theresa May stated that the contamination of patient’s blood was “an appalling tragedy which should simply never have happened”.
