As lockdown gradually lifts, there are calls for new laws to protect cyclists
As lockdown gradually lifts, people are being encouraged, if possible, to cycle to work. At the same time, there are calls for a new law to protect cyclists on the roads. This new law would ‘presume’ cyclists are innocent in a road accident with the introduction of a ‘presumed liability’ of other road users. Road accidents would be presumed to be the fault of the car, bus or lorry driver unless those road users could prove otherwise.
Britain is one of only five countries in Europe that makes the cyclist prove culpability of the other road user in an accident.
