Private renting affecting tenants’ health

A report in The Guardian, suggests that almost half of people who rent privately in England (8.5 million) are experiencing stress or anxiety and a quarter (2 million) are made physically sick as a result of their housing. The poll, which was carried out by YouGov on behalf of the housing charity Shelter, suggests that unaffordable rents, poor living conditions and the risk of eviction are all contributory factors. The findings also revealed that a third of renters had lost sleep at night because of worries.

Private renting has become more prominent in England, with nearly 1.6 million families renting private accommodation. This is more than double than a decade earlier.
